State insurance laws can vary but generally the order of recovery for loss (if coverage is applicable and/or available) is:
- Workers Compensation
- Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
- Medical Payment Coverage (MEDPAY)
- Liability Coverage (other party)
- Uninsured Motorist (UM) or Underinsured Motorist (UNDUM)
- Health Insurance or other applicable coverage
If your state and insurance company follows this list above then your PIP would pay out first to its limits and then your uninsured motorist coverage would be gone to next, before your own personal health insurance.
Most, but not all personal medical insurers will cover auto accident injuries. The only time it is not covered if there is an exclusion for auto incidents in your health insurance policy so if you think your own regular health insurance may need to be gone to for injuries sustained from the accident with the uninsured motorist, check with your medical insurance provider to make sure they would cover bills from the incident.
