I am currently insured in Texas. I will be visiting Canada soon. Will my car insurance be valid there? And if so, for how long?

Normally your US auto insurance will cover you on short trips or vacations in Canada. To find out how long your insurance company will extend this coverage to you and your vehicle, check with your car insurance provider.

If you are going to Canada for a vacation, and not to stay, your current auto insurance policy will likely cover your vehicle while you are in Canada. To make certain though check with your insurance company's agent that your current coverages will be enough for Canadian laws for the area in Canada in which you are driving.

If your current insurance will cover you, you should ask your insurance company for a yellow Non-resident Inter-Province Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Card. This card signifies that your insurance company has agreed to provide coverage of not less than the minimum legal requirement in any Canadian jurisdiction in which you will travel. You will also need to keep your car's registration paperwork with you to show authorities if asked.

If you are an American that plans to move to Canada and become a resident there, you should be able to register your vehicle by following the import and registration instructions. Not all cars are allowed through for importation and registration though.

To find out about the process to import a US car from the United States to Canada, you should contact the Canadian Registrar of Imported Vehicles. This Canadian agency should help describe what needs to be done to bring your vehicle across the border and into Canada if you are planning on staying in Canada for an extended period and not just for a holiday.
