There are insurance companies that may allow you to start a car insurance policy with only your Guatemala driver's license but most will then require you to obtain a United States license in the state in which you are residing and trying to purchase insurance in. It is doubtful that if an international license or driving permit (IDP) would help you obtain insurance. This type of license or permit is not what allows you to drive on the roadways in the Unites States of America; it is your valid license from your home country that allows you this privilege.

The IDP is simply a translation of a license issued by the country of residence to help people traveling to avoid language barriers. An international license is good to have so that if you are stopped by law enforcement the IDP translates your license into English and makes it easier for law enforcement, and other state agencies that need to see your license, to know that you foreign license is valid.
