My son is away at college and was arrested for underage drinking. He does not have a car at school but his license has been suspended for three months. He is on my car insurance (we only have one car). Will this affect my insurance rates? I live in Pennsylvania.

Even though your son is away at college, since he remains on your car insurance it is likely that his underage drinking offense could affect your insurance rates. An insurance company will normally take into account the driving records of all household members, especially those listed as drivers on the policy.

In Pennsylvania insurance companies can include surcharges. A surcharge is an additional premium charge, for a limited number of years, as a result of violations, suspensions or accidents on the driving record of any driver covered under your policy.

The PA Insurance Department states that a first named insured on a car insurance policy can exclude a spouse or teenager from their insurance policy to lower their premium or avoid being canceled. This is provided that the person being excluded can prove he or she has auto insurance with another company or the Assigned Risk Plan.

Pennsylvania’s Assigned Risk Plan is a program that offers automobile insurance to those are unable to obtain coverage. If your son is unable to acquire his own policy and you want him off of your policy he may see about Assigned Risk insurance. He would need to ask an insurance agent to help him make an application to the Pennsylvania Assigned Risk Plan. In order for an agent to offer an assigned risk plan policy, he or she must be certified by the Plan.

Since insurance company rating systems differ, to find out for certain how your son's violation of the law will affect your insurance rates contact your insurance agent. Also your insurance provider's rating system should be filed with the PA Insurance Department if you would rather contact them for this information.
