I have a California drivers license. I recently got 2 speeding tickets this year. One from South Carolina and the other from NY. They both went on my CA driving record. I just recently moved to North Carolina. If I get a NC driver license will those points disappear from my license and/or my insurance record?

If you recently moved to North Carolina then you will to obtain a NC driver's license soon. A new resident of NC has 60 days after establishing residence to obtain a North Carolina license or learner permit. If you hold a commercial drivers license from another jurisdiction and wish to maintain a commercial license, you must apply for and receive a North Carolina commercial license within 30 days after becoming a resident.

A new resident, 18 years or older, applying for a Class C license is required to take the:

  • Knowledge test;
  • Vision test;
  • Traffic signs recognition test; and
  • Driving skills test

To find out if the NC Division of Motor Vehicles will transfer any of the moving violation offenses that showed on you California license to your new North Carolina license, contact them directly. Likely the points will not transfer since CA and NC have different point systems in place but again check with the NC DMV to find out for certain.

With regards to insurance, a NC insurance company will probably check out your CA driving record when determining your rates. Normally if you have just moved to a different state, and thus do not have much of a driving record there, insurance carriers will look back at your driving history from your previous state.
