Yes, most insurance companies require you to be placed on an insurance policy once you receive your G1. Your parents should contact their insurance provider to inform them of your licensing status if you are living in their household so that you can be added to their policy and covered for driving their cars.
Typically there is no charge for adding a driver to the policy with just their G1 license. Some companies even give a credit discount when you get a G2 license as long as no accidents or convictions occurred and you have been on the insurance policy with a G1 license for 1 year.
Upon completion of G2, a premium is rated and charged. Upon successfully obtaining the final level (G) of the graduated licensing system often times a reduced premium or discount may be applied. Many insurance companies offer different ratings and discounts for children being away at university, good grade discounts and driver training discounts.
