I received a Massachusetts speeding ticket (21 mph over the limit) but I reside in New York and my license is from NYS. Is it still true as of now, 11/2006, that the MA conviction is not reported to NYS and it does not add points/appear on NYS record? Also, does my insurance company get this info from their own database?

According to the New York State DMV website, as of November 2006, they do not record out of state violations committed by NYS drivers in other jurisdictions. The exceptions are alcohol and drug related violations and moving violations committed in Quebec or Ontario. Except for violations in Ontario and Quebec, points are not added to your New York driving record for out of state moving violations.

The NYS DMV goes on to state though that if you do not respond to a ticket or fail to pay a fine for a moving violation that you committed in any state except Alaska, California, Michigan, Montana, Oregon or Wisconsin, the DMV will suspend your NYS driver license until you properly take care of the ticket.

So the MA speeding offense may be reported to NY but it does not appear that it will be placed on your NYS driving record nor have points assigned to it.

Insurance typically gets information about your moving violations from a MVR database that searches your state’s DMV for your record. They could do a more comprehensive search though, which may be able to find the ticket issued to you in Massachusetts.
