Comprehensive insurance coverage covers your vehicle for things such as damage to your car if it is stolen; or damaged by flood, fire, or animals while Collision covers to your car when your car hits, or is hit by, another vehicle, or other object. It is doubtful that your comprehensive policy would cover the damage to your vehicle you described if it was from another car since that would usually fall under the Collision category.
Uninsured motorist can be either for bodily injury or property damage. If yours is for bodily injury (UMBI) then it will not pay for damages sustained to your vehicle. This type of insurance normally covers you, the insured members of your household and your passengers for bodily/personal injuries, damages or death caused by an at-fault uninsured or hit-and-run driver.
If instead you have uninsured motorist property damage (UMPD), then your damages may be covered if they are from a hit and run accident. UMPD typically covers your auto when property damage is sustained by an insured and the negligent operator does not possess insurance.
Insurance companies’ guidelines and policy terms differ and not all UMPD policies cover hit and runs since you do not know who hit you and thus cannot prove the person was uninsured. Discuss this issue with your insurance agent. Your agent or a claims adjuster from your insurance carrier should be able to let you know if any of your coverages would allow you to place a claim for the damages your car received while parked unattended in front of your house.
