My wife was recently in a car accident. She was rear-end by another auto that also was hit. The at-fault person's carrier says that both cars were total. That person's policy only covers $15,000 for damages. The insurance wants us to do a power of attorney for our auto since I still owe on it, should I do this first or wait till a check is given to me for the payout of my auto?

Signing over your car to the insurance company, with the power of attorney, after it has been declared a total loss is part of the normal settlement process. The at-fault party’s insurance company may require this be done before giving you the check. If you are uncomfortable with this then you may want to get what the settlement amount will be in writing before signing over the car to them with the Power of Attorney.

Keep in mind since you still owe on your vehicle, the settlement check will likely be made out to both you and the lien holder since they still hold the title on the car. If you obtain a new car to take the place of your totaled vehicle and want to comparison shop for the best rates, start here by getting a car insurance quote with us.
