Car Insurance Question  All cars are registered and insurance in the state of South Carolina: If all vehicles that we own have insurance and either one of my children (who are grown and have their own insurance policy) who have not been specifically excluded but yet has not been listed as an occasional driver, drives any of these vehicles and gets into an accident that is their fault would my insurance company pay?

Generally if you allow an adult child or friend to borrow your car every now and then, your insurance coverages will be extended to them. If your grown children regularly drive your vehicle or live with you though, then your insurance company may require you to add them to your policy for them to be properly covered while driving your vehicle.

Since insurance companies’ guidelines can differ you will need to contact your insurance provider to find out for certain if your children would be covered under your current policy to drive your cars in the manner that they do. If they are covered, remember that in accidents usually it is the owner’s insurance policy that is primary and the driver’s that is secondary or used as excess in an accident if the claims go above the limits of the owner’s policy.

For information on the insurance laws of South Carolina, you can contact the SC Department of Insurance. If you or any of your children need a car insurance quote, think of us first.
