Car Insurance Question  I am looking into purchasing a used car from a private seller in a different city. What do I need to do in order to have the car insured for my drive home? Will the policy on my current automobile cover it, or would I need to contact my insurance agent prior to purchasing the car?

If you are transferring cover to the used vehicle because it is replacing another vehicle on your policy then you may have a "grace period" in which to switch the coverage off of one car and onto the car you are buying from private seller. This grace period for the transfer of coverage will depend on state laws and insurance guidelines.

If instead this car will be an additional vehicle to be placed on your insurance policy then likely there will not be a grace period or coverage for the car until you place it on there by notifying your insurance agent about the vehicle.

To make sure that you are properly insured for your drive home, inform your insurance agent about the used car you plan to purchase prior to purchasing it. The agent then should be able to set up the vehicle so that it will be insured for the drive home and if for some reason you do not end up buying the car then just call the agent to make sure the vehicle is not added to the policy after all.
