Your new home state of Virginia and the state which you received your speeding ticket, Maryland, are both members of the Drivers License Compact (DLC). As members of this Compact the 2 states will exchange information regarding moving violations their licensed drivers received out of state.
Once you are convicted of the Maryland speeding offense the MD MVA or courts will forward this moving violation information onto the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. The VA DMV states that demerit points can be assigned to your driving record for traffic convictions occurring out of state.
In Virginia points for speeding violations are allocated as follows:
- 3 points - Speeding 1-9 mph above the posted speed limit
- 4 points - Speeding 10-19 mph above the posted speed limit
- 6 points - Speeding 20 mph or more above the posted speed limit and is considered reckless driving.
Once the MD violation is placed on your VA driving record, your insurance company could see the offense and thus cause your rates to rise. Virginia allows insurance companies to assign points on your insurance record but these point values are developed by individual insurance companies so you will have to contact your provider to see if this out of state speeding ticket will affect your premium.
