It sounds as if when you are home you will be driving your parent's vehicle. If this is the case then they will need to check with their insurance provider to see what options are available to cover you when you come home from college. If you are still using your parent’s house as your address of record, their insurance company may still consider you to be a household member that needs to be on the policy, especially in order to be covered and drive a vehicle when you come home to visit during winter or summer breaks.
Insurance companies’ guidelines differ so you will need to discuss being away at college with an insurance agent from your parent’s insurance provider. Most insurance companies require that all household members are included on a policy, including any children away from home or at college that may operate your vehicle during the occasional trips home.
If you will be attending school at least 100 miles away from home and are not taking a car, you may be able to get a discounted rate; this again differs depending upon the insurance company's guidelines.
Insurance Information Institute notes that if parents are sending a son or daughter to college without a car, they may qualify for a reduced rate on their own auto insurance. If their child was driving their car, many companies give an "away at school" credit. Or the company may reduce the higher rate for a youthful operator to the rate for a regular adult, given the reduced time the young person will be driving the car. Your parents would need to check with their insurance agent to see if their company offers any of these discounts.
Since you will be away at school (college or university) and are not taking a car with you, some companies will offer your parents an exclusion endorsement that basically says I know if he gets behind the wheel of a car, he is not covered. In this case, there's no charge for insurance, because there is no coverage, but this endorsement is probably not right for your situation since you would also not be covered to drive your parent’s vehicle when you came home for visits.
