Car Insurance Question  I live in Kentucky and have a KY drivers license. I recently received a ticket in Ohio (Cincinnati). Will KY assign points for the ticket since it was issued in Ohio or will Ohio report the ticket to KY?

Ohio and Kentucky are both part of the Drivers License Compact which requires member states to report speeding tickets and other moving violations back to the state in which a person is license. Thus Ohio's courts should inform the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet of the speeding citation you received out of state.

It has been stated that Kentucky does not assess points for out of state speeding tickets but does for other types of moving violations. You should check with the KY Transportation Cabinet to make certain this has not changed.

According to the KY driver's manual, the Transportation Cabinet's Division of Driver Licensing keeps a record of all moving traffic violations on each driver licensed in Kentucky. These records are based on reports of traffic convictions, forfeiture of bail, or payment of fine, with or without court appearances, which are forwarded to the Division of Driver Licensing by the courts throughout the United States.

Since the OH ticket will likely appear on your Kentucky driving record, then your insurance company could see it the next time they checked your MVR. It will depend upon your insurance carrier's rating system if this speeding ticket will affect your rates. Find out about the rating system from your insurance agent.

If your rates do rise due to this out of state then you may want to shop around for new insurance quotes, which you can start doing here with us.
