State requirements regarding the filing of an SR-22 differ but it is doubtful that your state would allow your parent's insurance to file it for you if you are not on the policy. This is due to the fact that the SR-22 needs to show that you are being financially responsible by filing this certificate. If you do not have the required insurance in your name then you are not fulfilling the requirements of the SR-22 certificate.
If you do not have a vehicle to place your SR-22 on then you may need to seek an insurance company that will allow you to carry a non-owners SR-22. A non-owners SR-22 generally allows the named insure to drive any vehicle that they are given permission to drive by the vehicle owner, unless the vehicle is owned by a household member.
Thus the different between a normal SR-22 and a Non-Owners SR-22 is that with a Non-Owners SR-22 policy you do not own a vehicle to directly insure. While with a SR-22 policy you own a vehicle in which the insurance is put on.
You may obtain a non-owners liability SR22 insurance policy with many of our partner companies. You can obtain a quote for a non-owner SR-22 policy by following the link and entering your zip code. Currently, in most states you can complete a quote on our site, in other states you are directed to our partners.
Where we are able to offer non-owners insurance the vehicle screen has this option to select a non-owners policy: "Check this box if you do not own a vehicle and would like to purchase a non-owners policy."
