Car Insurance Question  About 6 months ago I was in a single-vehicle accident with damage only to my vehicle. I was cited for Failure to Maintain Control and an accident report was filed. However, I never filed a claim with my insurance company. I am now shopping for auto insurance and have a question. Is this situation considered an "at-fault accident"? When I am answering questions for a quote, it asks about accidents and moving violations. Do insurance companies consider this 2 separate things since I was cited for a moving violation AND an accident report was filed? Or do they just consider this a moving violation? I am not sure how I am supposed to answer these questions in this situation. For example, do I have to list an accident AND a moving violation, or just one or the other? If they consider this a moving violation AND an at-fault accident, does that mean I am getting penalized twice for this single incident?

Typically when you have a single car crash it is found to be an at-fault accident for the driver. Since you had the accident and were cited for failure to maintain control you will need to list both items when asked about prior violations and accidents on insurance applications or questionnaires.

Since both the accident and the violation you were ticketed for will both likely be listed on your driving record it is better to be upfront with any insurance company and inform them of both items. Giving all the correct past information allows an insurance company to give you a more accurate quote.

Whether an insurance company will consider the accident and ticket as one incident or two separate risk factors will depend upon an insurance company's underwriting guidelines. In most states insurance companies are allowed to have their own rating systems so different insurance companies will likely rate you and these items differently, that is why we suggest you comparison shop for your next insurance policy.

If you leave information off of your insurance application most insurance companies will eventually find out the information anyway when checking your consumer report and also verifying your driving and claims record. If they find out new information at this point your insurance premium price will be adjusted and thus your quoted amount is likely to change.

In most states, if you intentionally leave off information or mislead the insurance company in order to obtain a lower premium rate it can be considered insurance fraud. So make sure you do not allow this to happen

Give us your information and we can quickly give you an auto insurance quote.
