In New Jersey state law requires that any registered vehicle be covered by an insurance policy. Failure to maintain coverage can lead to higher prices for new policies, placement in the assigned risk pool, suspension or revocation of your driver’s license or registration, and additional fines and penalties.
According to the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission and Department of Banking and Insurance if you take your vehicle off the road because it is not operational or you are not using it, you must surrender your license plates to the New Jersey MVC in order not to be required to have insurance coverage in place.
So if you do not turn in your plates but cancel your New Jersey insurance when you are out of state in Florida for 4 months a year then you could receive the penalties listed above.
