We live in New Jersey, and I have a son who is 17 who just obtained his driving permit. Since he does not own a car, is he required to purchase insurance, either under my current policy or on his own? His father, who lives in the Midwest, has been told by his insurance company that as long as he is driving with someone who is insured, he does not have to be added to any one's policy.

Insurance company guidelines differ regarding permit holders and if they must be added to a policy. Many insurance companies will require you to inform them when a child has obtained their permit but will allow you to hold off on adding them as a driver until they have acquired a license. Perhaps this is what his father was referring to. But once your son is licensed since he is a household member he will most likely be required by your insurer to be added to the policy to be covered to drive your car.

You should notify your insurance provider of your son's licensing status and your agent should be able to advise you as to what the insurance company will require of you. You can also contact the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance for information on the state guidelines regarding this situation.

car insurance commentsI rated this question a five because its right in the middle of the road and though there is some info, it doesnt clarify my question to the extent I was hoping. Why are all car insurance laws always in the gray zone and not a clear case answer of black and white?
