Car Insurance Question  I have had my child's DVD player (it mounts in between the seats) and the over-head LCD monitor -down roof mounted stolen out of my car when it was park for 10 minutes. If I file a claim, does this fall into the part of my $500 deductible comprehensive insurance?

You will need to check over the terms of your comprehensive insurance coverage to see if the LCD monitor and DVD player would be covered, if they are then your deductible would be due. Typically though your auto policy only covers original equipment included by the manufacturer. So if the DVD was additional equipment added by the dealership or put in by another after the purchase of the car then likely the DVD players and televisions placed in a vehicle would not be covered under your comprehensive coverage.

Should your vehicle have additional equipment, accessories, enhancements, and changes that alter the appearance or performance of the vehicle, it’s advisable that you buy additional coverage to protect these items. Many companies require you to have special equipment or customized equipment coverage to cover extras in a car. Which type of coverage you would get would depend on what your insurance carrier has to offer.

Special Equipment is covered if the equipment is declared on the application and the appropriate premium paid. Items may include equipment for disabled persons, television, vcr, stereo, etc. Not all companies will provide this coverage, and some will limit the amount of coverage available.

Customized equipment coverage is appropriate if your vehicle has permanently installed custom parts or equipment other than those installed by the original manufacturer. Esurance offers this type of coverage. Examples of customized equipment include:

  • Any dealer-installed equipment that is not offered by the original manufacturer
  • Special equipment on vehicles, vans, and trucks, including: running boards, brush bars, roll bars, undercarriage lighting, fog lights, bed liners, camper shells, trailer hitches, etc.
  • Customized wheels, spoilers, suspensions or performance-related equipment
  • Stereo, sound recording, and television equipment
  • Customized paint or decals

If you find out that the DVD and LCD TV monitor are not covered by your auto insurance check to see if these items will be covered by your homeowner's or renters insurance. For quotes on homeowners or renters insurance policies you can contact our partner Safeco at these links or by calling 1-800-936-0356.
