In California is it required to have the sr-22 on file and active if your DL has been suspended for an unrelated issue?

In California the SR-22 can be required for a variety of reasons including after a license suspension for a DUI and for reinstating a driver's license after a suspension for not having insurance or another type of financial responsibility on your vehicle.

Without knowing what unrelated issue you are referring to we cannot say for certain whether you would need a SR-22 actively on file through an insurance company for the DMV to verify.

You can seek an answer to your specific situation with the CA Department of Motor Vehicles. You can search the CA DMV website or contact them at 1-800-777-0133 during normal business hours (Between 8-5, Mon., Tues., Thurs., & Fri. Between 9-5 on Wednesdays) for information about your particular situation. They advise you to have your driver’s license number and any other information sent to you from DMV available.
