Is the owner of a stolen vehicle liable for a hit and run accident?

No, typically the owner of a stolen vehicle will not be held responsible for damages the thief caused to other vehicles while the stolen car was their possession.

Normally to be held responsible for damages caused by your car, you would have to give the driver permission to operate the vehicle. Since a thief operating your stolen vehicle was not giving permission by you, the owner, usually you would not be held responsible if they hit someone in a hit and run accident.

State liability laws differ though so you want to check with a lawyer to make certain what the owner of a stolen car can be held liable for in your state. To get consumer information about this situation try contacting your state's insurance regulator.
