The electronic Notification of Insurance Cancellation Program (Title 29-A, section 1601-A of the state statutes) took effect January 1, 2005.This law requires insurers to report the cancellation or termination of mandatory liability insurance coverage on vehicles registered in Maine.
The law requires the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) to issue a notice to the owners of those vehicles—indicating that their registration will be suspended if they do not provide evidence that new insurance coverage has been obtained. Registrations will then be suspended if evidence of insurance is not provided within 30 days of the date BMV was notified by the insurance company
If you have received a letter from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) notifying you that the BMV has received notification of termination of your insurance, you must provide evidence of active insurance before the effective suspension date listed at the beginning of that letter. They allow you to provide this proof online, by mail, by fax or in person at a BMV location.
If your privileges have already been suspended then to get them reinstated or restored you must provide proof of active auto insurance. If your registration suspension already is in effect or becomes effective before the Bureau receives your evidence of insurance, you also must pay a reinstatement fee of $35.00.
You will know when your registration certificate and plates have been restored when you receive a letter of reinstatement at your mailing address. The BMV notes that you should not consider that the registration has been reinstated prior to receiving a letter of reinstatement from the Secretary of State.
