My girlfriend borrowed my car to run an errand and while she was stopped at a red light she was rear-ended by an elderly woman who proceeded to drive off. My girlfriend got the make, model, and plate number of the woman's car. Will my insurance be affected since my girlfriend is not on my policy and will my insurance cover the damage to my bumper? I live in Mass and have full-coverage on my vehicle.

You will have to check with your insurance provider to find out if your coverages extended to your girlfriend while she was operating your vehicle under the terms of your policy. Normally your insurance will extend to those that you give permission to use your vehicle.

If your girlfriend lives with you and you did not list her as a licensed household driver your insurance company may have issues but if she lives elsewhere and occasionally borrows the car they likely will not take issue with her driving it. If your insurance company does not have a problem with your girlfriend driving the car then you should be able to place a claim against your collision coverage.

You may want to give your insurer the information your girlfriend wrote down about the hit and run car to see if they can track down the at-fault party. And if your girlfriend had a police report taken about the incident your insurance carrier will probably want that as well.

Since this was a hit and run it would not appear that you would get surcharged by your insurance company. You receive surcharge points if you are more than 50% at-fault for a motor vehicle accident that results in damage to property or bodily injury of more than $500. Since your girlfriend was hit by another party that then left the scene of the accident she should not be found at fault.
