My Florida license was recently suspended due to no car insurance. How do I start to reinstated it? Do I call Tallahassee or go to the DMV? I'm in the process of purchasing another used car, do I insure my old car which I will not be using or the new car which is not under my name yet?

In Florida if your license is suspended due to being found without auto insurance you should contact the Highway Department of Motor Vehicles (HSMV). The HSMV website may give you the information you seek or you can call the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, Customer Service Center, at 850/922-9000.

To get your license reinstated you will need to pay a reinstatement fee of $150 up to $500, for subsequent violations, and provide proof of current Florida insurance. Any cars registered to you will need to be included on your insurance policy. So if the older car that you do not plan on driving is still registered to you it will need to have Florida insurance on it as well as the "new" vehicle that you are purchasing.

If you own a vehicle with at least four wheels and are registering it, you must have Florida insurance. Thus all registered cars in Florida require Florida auto insurance.

Florida's minimum auto insurance coverage of $10,000 personal injury protection (PIP) and $10,000 property damage liability (PDL) is required as long as you have a valid Florida tag, even if the vehicle is in another state or inoperative. There are no exemptions in the law according to the FL HSMV; insurance coverage must be maintained throughout the entire vehicle registration period. So even once you obtain a new car, if you keep registration on your older vehicle it to will need to have insurance on it.

If you want to take coverage off of one of the cars you would need to surrender your tag and registration at the nearest driver license or tag office and take your vehicle off the roadway.
