I live in Maryland and got a speeding ticket in Wisconsin. Will points transfer to my home state? I could not find the answer in the MD MVA.

Maryland is part of the Drivers License Compact while Wisconsin is not however WI has decided to still report tickets to out of state motorists' home states.

Speeding tickets in Wisconsin can be assigned 3 to 6 points depending upon how many miles over the speed limit you were cited for. Speeding 1 through 10 mph over limit is 3 points. Speeding 11 through 19 mph over limit is 4 points and speeding 20 mph or more over limit is 6 points.

The newly updated MD Motor Vehicle Administration site notes that if you are convicted of a vehicle-related offense in a jurisdiction outside of Maryland, the MVA may assess points. The point values identified in Maryland law for similar offenses determine the number of points that you will be assessed.

The Maryland driver's manual currently states that once the MVA receives ticket information from another state they treat it as if the violation occurred in state. If that is the case, even if the offense is not one that they assign points to, it will be placed on your Maryland driving record.

To find out if points will be assigned to your driving record for this Wisconsin speeding ticket check directly with the MD MVA since it does not appear that all out of state violations will be assessed points. If points are put on your license they will be from the Maryland points list and not the Wisconsin points system.
