Car Insurance Question  I just received a speeding ticket for 90 mph in a 65 mph zone in New Jersey, which carries a 4 point value. How much can I expect my insurance to go up?

According to the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission listing of the NJSA point scale, speeding can get you 2, 4 or 5 points on your license. For exceeding the maximum speed by 1 - 14 miles it is 2 points, for exceeding the limit by 15 - 29 mph it is 4 points and it is 5 points for exceeding the posted limit by 30 mph or more. SO as you already know for being cited for 25 over the speed limit it is 4 points

NJ insurance companies can assign insurance points for moving violations. Insurance points are used by insurance carriers to determine the level of premiums that an insured must pay for liability coverage. Typically insurance points are the same as motor vehicle points, so in your case 4 insurance points for your speeding violation.

A total of 7 or fewer points will determine the tier of coverage for which an insured may qualify when purchasing insurance in the voluntary market. An accumulation of more than 7 insurance points will disqualify the insured from purchasing insurance in the voluntary market.

If your insurance rates will be affected by this speeding ticket will depend upon your insurance company's rating and points system. The New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance (DOBI) allows insurers to set up their own individual rating tiers. Under these tier systems, drivers are assigned to different rating tiers according to their driving history and a variety of other risk factors.

To find out if your insurance company's tier system will raise your rates due to this speeding violation on your driving record, ask your agent or contact the NJ DOBI since insurer's rating tiers must be filed with this state agency.
