Car Insurance Question  I was involved in an accident a year ago in VA. I was at fault. I want to know how long a person can wait to settle with the insurance company. Also I will be getting married soon and I wanted to know if my future husbands finances could be affected.

The Virginia Bureau of Insurance (BOI) notes that an insurance company should acknowledge receipt of an accident claim report within ten working days. There is no specific time limit in which the company must settle a claim though. Since each claim is different, the length of time to settle may vary.

While there is usually a statute of limitations on placing a claim there is not necessarily one for settling on the claim, especially if there are ongoing bills related to repairs or injuries sustained in the car accident.

To find out for certain how long the other party has to settle with your insurance company and if you or your future husband's assets will be at risk try contacting the VA BOI and/or a lawyer that specializes in this type of Virginia law.
