In California getting to take school you must get permission from the court in the jurisdiction in which you were cited. For example in Kern County California the eligibility requirements to attend traffic school include:
- You must not have attended traffic school on a prior citation issued within 18 months of the issue date of your present citation.
- You have a valid driver's license.
- You must not have been cited for exceeding the maximum or reasonable speed by more than 25 miles per hour or as determined by the judicial officer.
- The citation must not require a mandatory court appearance. (This information will be listed on the Courtesy Notice.)
- The due date on your ticket must not be past.
If you meet the requirements and wish to attend Traffic School for a Kern County ticket you will be required to pay the fine (bail) and traffic school fee. Once this is done you should be provided with further instructions including a list of DMV certified schools in your area and be given a future date of approximately 60 days to complete Traffic School.
When you complete Traffic School, you will be provided with proof of completion. Once you receive this proof, submit it to the court (in person or via mail). Upon the court receiving proof of such completion, your case should be dismissed and the violation will not appear on your driving record.
You must complete traffic school and submit the certificate of completion to the Court on or before the due date given to you by the Court. So while it may typically be 60 days you have to complete traffic school and show your certificate to the court it may differ by court or jurisdiction.
If you need to attend traffic school to get a ticket dismissed in CA check with the county courthouse to see how long you have before the completion certificate is due.
