In Alabama the penalties for a first time conviction of a DUI or DWI is a fine of $600 to $2,100, up to one year in jail or by both fine and imprisonment. Also the person's driver's license will be suspended for 90 days.
In addition to the penalties listed above, we have read that those convicted of Driving under the Influence in AL are also required to post SR-22 insurance and attend and complete a DUI or substance abuse program.
From the information we found under normal circumstances in Alabama the SR2-2 will be required to be kept for a period of three years. However, the DPS should inform you how long you will actually be required to file SR22. Contact the Alabama Department of Public Safety to find out for certain how long you will be required to hold a SR-22 if you have been convicted of a DUI/DWI violation.
