Car Insurance Question  My grandson let his SR22 insurance expire after one year. He plans to renew but he is out of town. What might be the consequences?

State laws and penalties differ regarding what the consequences are when a person does not carry their SR-22 financial responsibility certificate for the amount of time the state required them to. Generally though, the penalties for a lapse in the SR22 coverage include a suspension of the person's driver's license.

The driving privileges are typically taken away since the SR-22 is usually required for a person to reinstate their license after a suspension or revocation due to being uninsured, having a DUI, too many points on their license, etc. If the person is not holding the proper insurance coverage and the SR-22 that was required as terms of their license reinstatement, then the license can be suspended again.

For your grandson to find out what penalties he may be facing he should try contacting the local Department of Motor Vehicles.

If he needs a quote for a new SR22 policy, he can follow this link for a car insurance quote.
