Car Insurance Question  I hit a horse and buggy and the horse is now dead. My auto is also has damaged. Under my liability and comprehensive policies, what coverage will I have?

To find out exactly what coverages and limits you have on your liability and physical damages portions of your auto insurance policy read through the policy and contact your insurance agent.

In general, the property damage liability portion of your policy should cover the damages to the buggy and the horse. Because the horse died this may be a complex situation so discuss it with your agent and perhaps contact your state's insurance regulator for consumer help on how insurance should cover the situation.

The collision or comprehensive portion of your policy should cover the damages to your vehicle from the accident. Normally hitting an animal would be covered under comprehensive coverages but since the horse was being used to pull the buggy and thus a type of vehicle on the road, this may be considered a collision. Once you place a claim for your damages with your insurance company they should advise you which part of your policy will cover you.
