No, if your car is registered in New York you cannot obtain Florida insurance on it and meet the requirements put on you as the owner by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (NYSDMV).
According to the NYS DMV auto liability insurance coverage must be NYS insurance coverage, issued by a company authorized to do business in NYS and licensed by the NYS Insurance Department. Out-of-state insurance coverage of any type is NEVER acceptable or valid. If your vehicle is registered in NYS, the liability insurance coverage must be NYS insurance coverage.
If you have a vacation home in Florida and want to keep a car there, then instead of keeping New York registration on the vehicle you may want to change it over to Florida registration. This way you can obtain Florida insurance on it and will not have to drive it up to NY each year for inspection purposes.
Keep in mind according to Florida statutes any person who has a vehicle in Florida for more than 90 days during a 365 day period (the days do not need to be consecutive) must purchase personal injury protection and property damage liability insurance coverage. So if you do not register your car in FL but keep it here for 90 days that you will need to make sure you have these Florida mandated auto insurance coverages put on it.
