Car Insurance Question  I was involved in a 4-car accident on the interstate (I was car #4). Car #1 caused all of us to brake to a sudden stop, causing damage to all cars but the first. We were all cited for following too close, but I believe the first car was cited for failure to control their vehicle. All of our information was given to the police, not shared with each other - can the police officer give us their contact info? Or is it only for the insurance adjusters? I want to be able to place a claim through the first driver's insurance. Also, I made a payment over the phone toward reinstating my policy literally minutes before the accident, and now my insurance is "investigating" that there was a lapse of coverage - what can I do?

You should be able to contact the police stationĀ for the officer that took the accident report and get a copy of the report. Usually this may take a couple of days and there might be a small fee for the copy but normally the accident report should list all of the driver's information on it.

You can try to place a claim with the car #1's driver's insurance policy. The claims adjuster for his insurance company will investigate you claim and decide whether to pay on it or deny it based on the police report, statements from the drivers involved, etc.

As for your own insurance company's investigation, all you can do is be truthful about what had happened. From your information it would appear that you had a lapse in insurance coverage since you said you called to have it reinstated before the accident occurred. The insurance company should be able to determine if the reinstatement had gone through before the accident or not fromĀ the time listed on the accident report.

You must understand this type of incident must be investigated since there are those motorists that would try to obtain insurance coverage after their car has been damaged so that they can try to get their repairs paid for by the insurance company though they were without coverage at the time of the accident.
