Car Insurance Question  A friend borrowed my car and had a small accident. My car is OK but the damage on the other car is about $3000. I have never had an accident. If I involve my insurer they want to raise my rate. Can my insurance raise my rate even if the driver that had the accident isn't on the policy?

Yes, if claims are placed with your insurance company for the accident your friend had there is a possibility that your rates could be raised. It will depend upon your insurance company's rating system but normally both your driving record and claims history can be looked at when rates are being determined.

Each insurance company examines your driving record and claims history differently. Some insurance carriers may chose not to impose a higher rate if the accident is not on your driving record.

On the other hand, some insurance companies look at your claims history in addition to your driving record and as result may impose a higher premium if your insurance company pays out a claim.

If the accident is being recorded on your friend's motor vehicle record then his insurance may be affect as well.
