I have a policy based in Hawaii. My PIP limit is 10,000 on policy and my Additional PIP limit is 50,000 as indicated on my policy. What would be my overall PIP limit be 50,000 or 60,000? In other words, would my PIP limits get replaced with my additional PIP limits or get added to?

For complete coverage definitions and conditions, limitations or exclusions, you will need refer to your actual auto policy contract. Due to state laws differing as well as insurance companies' guidelines and policy terms your Additional PIP may have your limits as $50,000 or $60,000. See the details below for clarification.

When PIP is required, some auto insurance carriers consider the $10,000 Personal Injury Protection as “Basic” and then the $50,000 coverage for Additional PIP includes the Basic coverage. In that case, it would be a $50,000 overall PIP limit.

Most insurance carriers though consider Additional PIP as Basic plus $50,000. In this example the overall limit would be $60,000. A simple phone call to your agent would be best. He or she can explain to you the limits you have with your Additional PIP.
