My son said his tags were removed because of no insurance, we live in Maryland, I've never heard of anything like this before. Could this be true if so, how long would this action take?

If you cancel or let your insurance lapse in Maryland, you need to turn in your license plates and registration card immediately to any Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) office in order to not receive penalties.

The penalties that one may receive if they are found driving uninsured in Maryland include:

  • Lose of license plates and vehicle registration privileges.
  • Pay uninsured motorist penalty fee for each lapse of insurance - $150 for the first 30 days, $7 for each day thereafter.
  • Pay a restoration fee of up to $25 for a vehicle's registration.
  • Be prohibited from registering any future vehicles until all insurance violations are cleared.
  • Have license plates confiscated by a tag recovery agent, once the registration suspension is in effect

Beyond these penalties, are the fines and penalties that may be imposed by a court of law. So if your son had a lapse in insurance that the DMV was notified of or if he was found to be driving without insurance then having to turn in his license tags is required by the state.

To find out how long his plates will be suspended your son or you can contact the MD Motor Vehicle Administration
