I was involved in a single-vehicle accident (in CA). My car hit a tree. I have full coverage on my vehicle, as well as GAP coverage. The vehicle was financed. I was seriously injured in the accident. Does bodily injury insurance usually cover injuries to the driver? If not, what coverage usually does? The insurance company mentioned a settlement, but I am not sure if that meant for the value of the car, or for the injuries as well. I have collision, comprehensive, liability, property damage, and UMPD/CDW (whatever that is).

Bodily Injury liability covers other people's bodily injuries or death for which you are responsible not your own injuries as the at-fault driver, which you definitely are in a single car accident into a tree.

For your injuries to be covered by your auto insurance you would need coverage such as personal injury protection (PIP) or medical payment. Basic PIP coverage is for an insured's own injuries on a first-party basis, without regard to fault.

Medical payment covers medical expenses to you and your passengers injured in an accident. It does not matter who is at fault. Medical payments may also cover policyholders and their family members when they are injured while riding in someone else's car or when they are hit by a car while on foot or bicycling.

Coverage for your bodily injuries would be limited to the terms and conditions contained in your policy but it does not appear you have the type of auto insurance that will cover your injuries. You may want to see if your normal health insurance will cover the medical bills associated with your one car accident.

As for your vehicle, it appears it may be totaled and thus your collision coverage would be used as well as your GAP coverage if you owe more on your vehicle then its actual cash value (ACV).

You can read descriptions about uninsured motorist property damage (UMPD) and other types of auto insurance coverages in our learning center. To find out for certain about your coverages and if the injuries could be covered by any of them, contact your agent so that he or she can explain to you in detail about your policy.
