In Illinois, Financial Responsibility Insurance (SR-22) is the mechanism the state uses to monitor the insurance of problem drivers.
Driving under the influence (DUI) is a serious offense that is classified in Illinois as a violent crime. If you are convicted of DUI, the offense will permanently remain on your driving record. If you are arrested and/or convicted, you may lose your driving privileges and be fined and/or imprisoned. Repeat arrests or convictions may result in greater penalties.
When reinstating your license after a DUI the Secretary of State (SOS) monitors insurance coverage, by means of the SR22, for a period of time specified by law. The Illinois SOS does not state exactly the amount of time each offense requires the SR-22 to be carried but we have seen many times that IL requires it to be maintained for at least 36 months (3 years).
To find out how long you are required to carry the SR-22 due to a DUI conviction contact the IL Secretary of State directly. This state agency should be able to tell you how many years the SR22 is required and how to go about canceling it once you no longer are mandated by the state to carry it.
