I got a speeding ticket in Wisconsin and I know that they use demerit points. I believe Minnesota uses demerit points as well, correct? Yes, I do see that Wisconsin will contact Minnesota about the ticket. Will this be assessed onto my driving record? I have been to a few websites and some say that the demerit points will transfer and some say that they won't. How is your understanding of this situation?

You are correct that though Wisconsin is not part of the Drivers License Compact (DLC) that the state does have reciprocal agreements and will likely share your speeding ticket conviction with your home state of Minnesota.

In Wisconsin a speeding ticket comes with 3, 4 or 6 points depending how many miles per hour over the speed limit you were cited for. We were unable to find that Minnesota has a demerit or DMV points system. It is not mentioned in the MN Driver's manual or in the Transportation Statutes we have read through.

The MN driver's manual states that the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) maintains your driving record, which contains information about driving and licensing violations in Minnesota and other states. So it would appear that the Wisconsin violation conviction will be placed on your MN driving record.

The driver's manual also notes that if you commit a traffic offense in another state that would be grounds for suspension or revocation in Minnesota you may also get your license suspended or revoked in MN, even though the offense occurred out of state.

To the best of our knowledge the Minnesota DPS does not have a point system for driver infractions and improvement but keeps track of the violations placed on your license though and may suspend your license for repeatedly violating traffic laws. To find out for certain though about any demerit system that may exist contact the DPS.
