While we mostly deal with policies in the US we have UK partners you can check with regarding building up a no claims bonus (NCB) or no claims discount (NCD).
Beyond contacting these affiliates of ours in the UK you could also discuss this issue with your current insurer.
We did some research into this subject and found that many insurance companies say that a No Claims Bonus is a discount normally applied to the main driver of the vehicle and that additional drivers do not qualify for the NCB.
However there are some insurance carriers, such as Tesco, that we found which say being a driver named on someone else's policy will allow you to have a no claims bonus when starting your own policy.
These insurers say you will be credited with the appropriate introductory no claims discount, according to the number of full years you are named as a driver. For example, if you are named for 2 years and 6 months, you would receive an introductory no claims discount of 2 years. The granting of this introductory no claims discount is subject to certain restrictions though.
Thus to get credit for no claims bonus you may need to shop around for an insurer that allows this even though you previously were not the main driver on the auto insurance policy.
