Car Insurance Question  I have a Texas driver's license. I received a ticket for moving violation with an accident in Georgia. How long is the ticket going to stay in Texas driving history? How can I reduce points on this ticket?

While Texas is a part of the Drivers License Compact while Georgia is not, however GA still has agreements with other states to share information.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety they will place out of state offenses onto your TX driving record. The Texas points system lists that it is 2 points for a moving violation conviction in Texas or that in another state. Points however are not assigned for speeding less than 10% over the posted limit or for seat belt convictions, in case your ticket had to do with these infractions.

The TX DPS keeps moving violations and accidents on a driver's record for 5 years, with the exception of serious offenses such as DUI and no liability insurance which stay indefinitely.

To see if there is a way to reduce points you would need to first check with the Georgia courts to see if traffic school or other options are available to reduce or dismiss the ticket so that Texas is not informed about it. If these ways are not available to you and the ticket is reported to TX then you would need to contact the DPS to see if there are ways in which to reduce the points on your driving record in Texas.

If your insurance rates go up due to the out of state accident and ticket you may want to shop around for low cost car insurance.
