According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles your auto insurance needs to meet the minimum liability limits required by the state of CA and be issued by a company licensed to do business in California.
The minimum insurance required in California is $15,000 for injury/death to one person, $30,000 for injury/death to more than one person and $5,000 for damage to property. This coverage is known as 15/30/5.
Nevada differs in its minimum insurance requirements. NV state law requires minimum Bodily Injury Liability coverage of $15,000 per injured person up to a total of $30,000 per accident, and Property Damage Liability coverage with a minimum limit of $10,000. This basic coverage is often referred to as 15/30/10 coverage.
Your insurance company is required to electronically report insurance information for all private-use vehicle liability policies to the CA Department of Motor Vehicles which an out of state insurer would unlikely be able to do. That and the fact that most insures will not insure your vehicle if you move out of state and thus garage it in a different state.
If you current insurance company is also licensed to provide insurance in California you should ask your agent how to change your current NV insurance policy to a CA auto insurance policy so you can register your vehicle in California. For more information on California's insurance and registration requirements contact the CA DMV.
