I got a speeding ticket in Georgia going 95 in a 70 mph highway. I have a Florida driver's license and the cop said he has me radared at 95. I was driving someone else's car. Will my insurance go up if I have no points on my license but have previous traffic tickets?

Yes, your insurance rates could potentially go up due to this Georgia speeding ticket and other traffic offenses that you have on your Florida driving record. Georgia is not part of the Drivers License Compact (DLC) but does still share information regarding traffic tickets other state's licensed drivers have received there.

When Florida receives ticket information from other states the FL Department of Highway Safety and Motor Services (HSMV) will add the out of state citation to your driving record and assess points if the offense is a point-accessible violation according to Florida statutes. Florida law does not allow any school or program to remove points for a ticket received in another state.

According to the auto insurance consumer's guide for Florida, insurance companies consider drivers who have had an accident or received convictions for driving violations as higher risks. Companies may charge such drivers higher rates for automobile insurance than those with driving records free of accidents and violations. Each company has underwriting guidelines to determine what kind and how many accidents or violations during a specified period constitute a high-risk driver.

The Florida Department of Financial Services (FLDFS), the state's insurance regulator, notes that Florida Statute 626.9701 which states an insurance company may not surcharge an insured for non-criminal violations solely for speeding less than 70 mph on a four-lane major highway, outside of business or residential area. Unfortunately this would not apply to your current speeding violation since you were ticketed for going 95 mph.

To find out for certain if this Georgia speeding ticket plus the other traffic tickets you already have on your driving record will cause your rates to rise will depend upon your insurer's rating system. Since rating systems can differ from one insurance company to the next you will need to ask your agent about your provider's specific rating system.

If your rates do rise you can click here for a low low cost car insurance quote.
