I received a speeding ticket in Florida but am a New York state resident. Do I need to worry about points on my record for insurance purposes in New York, or can I just pay the fine to Florida and be done?

As you may be aware both Florida and New York are part of the Drivers License Compact (DLC) meaning that the Florida courts will send information on this speeding ticket back to the NYS DMV if you plead guilty and pay the fine, thus being convicted of the offense.

The NYS Department of Motor Vehicles though has decided not to record out of state violations committed by New York licensed drivers except for in certain alcohol or drug related violations or moving violations that took place in Quebec or Ontario, Canada. Also except for violation convictions coming from Quebec or Ontario, points are not added to a NY driver's record for out of state citations.

Since the Florida speeding ticket will not be placed on your NYS driving record it is unlikely, but not impossible, that your insurance rates will not be increased due to it.
