I recently received a ticket for driving without insurance in Nevada. I received a mandatory court date but it has not occurred yet. I have since paid a year of insurance ahead of time and have no other tickets. I know I have a fine but it is likely that my license will be taken away? If so then is it possible for me to get work privileges?

The State of Nevada requires that all registered motor vehicles be covered by liability insurance. A Nevada Evidence of Insurance card must be carried in your vehicle at all times and presented to any law enforcement officer upon request.

Nevada requires that automobile liability insurance policies carry minimum coverage of $15,000 for bodily injury or death of one person in any one accident; $30,000 for bodily injury or death or two or more persons on any one accident; and $10,000 for injury to or destruction of property of others in any one accident. Coverage must be reported by an insurance company authorized to do business in the State of Nevada.

Uninsured motorists are required to provide current proof of insurance and pay a $250 reinstatement fee to reinstate a suspended registration. The fee can be reduced to $50 if the motorist has sufficient proof that the vehicle was not operated during the period insurance coverage was not in effect.

Nevada law enforcement officers are required to remove the license plates from any vehicle on which the registration has been suspended. They may also impound the vehicle itself.

Insurance Verification suspensions are administrative actions taken by the Department of Motor Vehicles. They are not criminal charges and will not result in arrest warrants or prosecution.

From this information we received from the NV DMV, it appears your vehicle registration would be suspended if you were caught driving without insurance but not your driver's license. You can find out for certain what your penalties for being an uninsured motorist are by contacting the DMV and/or the court listed on your ticket.

A clerk of the court should be able to inform you of what penalties you may expect to receive when you appear at your court date and what information to bring with you to show that you now have auto insurance. If you find out that your license will be affected then the DMV should be able tell you if you an get a restricted license with work privileges.
