Hi, I just want to know what is the definition of legal cover in terms of car insurance.

Legal Cover appears to be a term used in the UK for coverage that can also be called a legal plan or legal expense.

In the UK, many auto insurance policies have optional extras you can add on to increase your coverages. One such additional “add on” is legal expense cover. This legal plan will over you for any legal costs that may arise from claims where the accident might not have been your fault. This legal cover has the advantage of ensuring your no claims discount remains intact. If you are unfortunate enough to be involved in an incident then legal cover should ensure that you get appointed a professional representative to help you through any proceedings and negotiations.

Even with professional representation you will still have to meet the terms of your policy such as informing your insurance company immediately of any settlement payments made in connection with the claim. There may be exclusions listed in a legal cover so read through the whole terms of this part of your policy if you choose this optional coverage for your auto.

In the US typically, a pre-paid legal policy is used to help offset or pay for the cost of future legal expenses. It is used to give you easy access to an attorney at a significant cost savings for legal advice. Typically, it is sold with an auto insurance policy in order to assist with legal matters related to driving (speeding tickets, etc.), but many plans have added value. For example, they may cover divorce costs, alimony, DUIs and much more.

To be clear pre-paid legal services offer specific services for a reduced price. You pay your annual fee and the plan pays the lawyer bills for legal expenses related to those defined coverages in the service plan. Legal insurance can also include coverage of specific legal services, but its main function is to protect an individual against all legal costs.

If you are interested in this type of optional auto insurance discuss it with your insurance agent. The specific definition and terms of a legal expense cover may differ so keep that in mind if you are shopping around for auto insurance including this option.
