Car Insurance Question  I have a license in New York State. Can I use that to drive or swap for a California state driver's license? I have just gotten a job in California.

According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles if you are a visitor in California over 18 and have a valid driver license from your home state or country, you may drive in this state without getting a California driver license as long as your home state license remains valid.

If you take a job here or become a resident, you must get a California driver license within 10 days. Residency is established by voting in a California election, paying resident tuition, filing for a homeowner's property tax exemption, or any other privilege or benefit not ordinarily extended to nonresidents.

The CA DMV lists what exactly you need to do in order to trade in your out of state, for you from New York, license to receive a valid California driver's license. This state agency also notes that if you have a license from another state, the driving test can be waived.

To get the list of items you need to take to the California DMV to receive a CA license check with their website or contact them over the phone.
