I just received a speeding ticket out of state, in Minnesota,75/70. I am a resident of Iowa and was wondering if MN would send this violation back to my home state since it is only 5 mph over? I have a CDL that is what worries me.

Minnesota and Iowa are both members of the Drivers License Compact (DLC) meaning that if you are convicted of this speeding ticket the MN courts should inform the IA Motor Vehicle Division.

According to the Iowa driver's manual traffic violations in other states apply to your Iowa record. If you are convicted in another state and the offense is grounds for suspension or revocation in Iowa, your license may be suspended or revoked.

As a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) holder you are required by state and federal laws to take certain steps if you receive a traffic ticket. CDL holders have more federal and state rules to follow when you receive a conviction for a traffic violation. These rules include the following two that apply here:

  • You must notify your employer within 30 days of a conviction for any traffic violation (except parking) regardless of what type of motor vehicle you were driving when the violation occurred.
  • You must notify your motor vehicle licensing agency within 30 days if you are convicted in any other jurisdiction of any traffic violation (except parking). This is true no matter what type of vehicle you were driving.

So if you are convicted of this Minnesota speeding citation then even if it somehow is not reported to the Iowa DMV, you would need to inform them yourself according the federal rules, which are listed in the IA commercial driver's manual.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) notes that Safety Acts concerning CDL holders make it so States within the US must be connected to the Commercial Driver's License Information System (CDLIS) and the National Driver Register (NDR) in order to exchange information about CMV drivers, traffic convictions, and disqualifications. Penalties will be applied if you do not notify your state's Department of Motor vehicles of traffic violations as required by federal or state laws.

Since this was only a 5 mph over the speed limit traffic citation you may try speaking with the clerk of the court in MN to see if it could dismissed or taken care of in a way which would not affect your CDL.
