How many points does negligent driving carry in Maryland?

We did not see the exact offense of negligent driving on the Maryland points assessment listing which is listed as part of the MD laws and regulations.

They do however list 6 points for careless driving and 5 points for aggressive driving in case your offense actually falls under either of these categories.

You can check with the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration for the amount of points negligent driving is assigned and/or read through the Maryland Statute (16-402) that list the points for motor vehicle violations. The state website has been updated and it has made it difficult to find all the points, so we have listed the most common point values here:

  • Driving without proof of insurance: 5 points
  • Speeding (9 miles per hour (MPH) or less): 1 points
  • Speeding (10 MPH and over): 2 points
  • Speeding (30 MPH and over): 5 points
  • Failure to yield: 1 points
  • Failure to stop at a red light: 2 points
