Is it legal/allowed to obtain a separate insurance policy with a different company for an additional vehicle in the household? I am looking into purchasing a 3rd car and adding my 17-year old daughter as an occasional driver. My current insurance company says my rates will double because they assume the 3rd car will be driven primarily by my daughter. I looked into rates with a different company with myself as the insured and my daughter as an additional driver and the quote was very low. Can I do this?

Yes, you can do this in some situations but all insurance companies have to be notified of all drivers and exclude them or rate them on the their policy.

In addition, many carriers will require the liability limits to be the same on all policies because both policies can be held liable (responsible) in certain claim situations.

If you decide to shop around for all vehicles to be placed on one insurance policy instead you can get auto insurance quotes online here with us.
